Ghorepani Poonhill Trek Overview

The Ghorepani trek is one of the short treks in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It is one of the oldest side treks which is still in great demand even today.

This trek is recommended for someone who has a tight schedule yet desires to feel the thrill that comes with an Annapurna region trekking in Nepal.

Major attractions of this trek include a hillside village within the well-known Annapurna Conservation Area. We will get to see wonderful views of the surrounding mountains and the diverse nature of Nepalese culture in the mountain regions.

Our journey begins from Kathmandu, the city flourishing with wooden architecture and temples, with a scenic drive to Pokhara.  It is also known as the adventure hub of Nepal as many tourists enjoy activities like Bungee Jumping, Rafting, Paragliding, etc. Pokhara is a city located beside the Phewa Lake which serves to reflect the beauty of Machhapuchhare.

Before setting off for our objective we will have plenty of time to immerse ourselves in the nightlife in Pokhara. Our journey begins with a drive to Naya Pool and a trek to Tikhe Dhunga. The trek is relatively easy as it is considered one of the easier treks Nepal has to offer though you will need to be moderately fit. The trailhead at Nayapul is less than 2 hours from Pokhara.

During the trek, we can see the Gurung and Magar settlements and their yards. The path consists of various stone staircases running from one village to the other. You can get a glance at the Nepali lifestyle in the mountain region. Many photographers enjoy taking photos of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri from this trek.

We will then trek to Ghorepani and trek further to reach Poonhill. As mentioned before, a magnificent sunrise awaits at an elevation of over 3000 meters accompanied by a majestic view of numerous peaks.

After reaching Poonhill you can either trek back to Nayapul or continue the trek for a couple more days via Ghandruk which makes it more of a circuit than a linear climb.

In summary, taking a road or air route from Kathmandu to Pokhara, we go by car to Nayapul, the starting point of the walk. The trekking route goes through Ghorepani and Tikhedunga, then on to Tadapani, Ghandrunk, and back to Nayapul via the Poon Hill sunrise climb.

As on every other trek, we start early in the morning except for the hike to Poon Hill which starts before dawn to be able to watch the magnificent sunrise over the mountains. Every day is a wonderful experience through the foothills of Annapurna. All your tiredness will be swept away by the scenery surrounding us during the trek.

Hikers find Ghorepani Poonhill trekking a simple choice. You get a wonderful opportunity to explore the hills, observe Himalayan people's daily life, and enjoy Nepal's breathtaking views.

This trek allows you to discover various terrains and Nepalese ways of living. It combines a cultural adventure with visual delights.

When Should You Go on the Ghorepani Poonhill Trek?

Like other treks, you have four seasons to pick from for this hike.

Spring and Autumn are the most popular seasons as they are generally clearer and have fewer difficulties.

Spring(March to May): Spring is known for its mild temperature and greenery. The blooming rhododendrons are a beautiful addition to the already amazing scenery. Their vibrant colors add to the scenic views filling it with numerous colors.

Spring is also followed by clear views and weather. The skies are relatively clear during spring and due to the pre-monsoon climate, there is excellent visibility of the landscapes.

Autumn(September to November): Autumn is another popular season as it also has stable weather and mild temperatures. Hikers love the time after the monsoon for trekking. You can see the Himalayan mountains better when the sky clears up. This makes the views more awesome and wide-ranging.

Autumn also has many Nepalese festivals with various cultures embracing different cultures and traditions. It is also the harvest season which only adds to the scenery and beautiful landscapes.

While these seasons are considered best. We should be prepared for any type of weather as weather can often change in unpredictable ways. It is recommended to check the forecasts before deciding the best time to trek.

Winter is another time to trek but the trail can get hard to walk due to the snow filling it up and the temperatures fluctuating. But, as it is less popular, it may be less crowded.

You might consider this if you wish to have a close experience of the trek for yourself. On the other hand, summer is also not popular due to it being the monsoon season. The visibility is poor and the trails are muddy and slippery.

Cost of Ghorepani Poonhill Trek

Depending on the package and the period you choose, the cost of Ghorepani Poonhill can take up to three hundred to six hundred U.S. dollars per person.

A 7-day trip can cost up to 700 dollars. As the group size increases the price per person decreases. Hiring a porter will cost around 20 to 30 U.S. dollars but it isn’t without benefit. So, we highly recommend you hire guides and porters.

How Tough is the Ghorepani Poonhill Trek?

The trek is relatively short, covering a distance of 45 kilometers with the maximum altitude being 3200 meters of the popular viewpoint, Poon Hill. This trek is one of the easier ones in the context of Nepal.

The trail is wide in most places and steep parts are made easier to hike. It can be considered the easiest hike to the Himalayas in Nepal. Though it is considered easy, there is a lot of vertical steepness despite the short distance.

On the hike to Ghorepani, we move 1400 meters in 10 kilometers. It is important to stay fit and remain prepared for the trek.

Acute mountain sickness generally isn’t a problem to worry about as it only really affects people after crossing the 3500-meter mark.

It is regarded as a family trekking route and It is important to pace yourself and walk carefully during the trek. The hike is pretty simple, and you can relax when you have a guide with you. They'll take care of everything.

You might want to do a few things to get ready for the hike:

Cardio-related Exercises: Our recommendation is to try to be as active as possible. You should perform some cardio workouts to let the muscles adapt to such overactivity and be prepared for the increase in tension. Thus, recreational activities such as swimming, jogging, and cycling should be completed before the trek. This means one needs to train to get the muscular memory required in the exercise to achieve long-distance walking.

Swimming can also help in increasing lung capacity and ability to handle tough tasks.

Hiking Training: You can take on smaller treks near Kathmandu or Pokhara to prepare for this trek. But this is optional as this trek is for people who are short on time.

Annapurna Circuit vs Ghorepani Poonhill Trek

Get the best from Annapurna on this classic trek and summit. Annapurna base camp is 4130 meters, visitors will encounter foothills of Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Annapurna III, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhare, Hiunchuli, and Gangapurna and awe-inspiring views in every step. It starts from Syauli Bazar and goes up covering villages like Ghandruk, Chinu, Bamboo, etc.

The trail takes hikers to Machhapuchhre Base Camp before reaching Annapurna Base Camp. Trekkers can complete the Annapurna Circuit in about 8-9 days, but the duration varies based on the chosen path. The trek is usually through higher altitudes hence this trek isn't ideal for a family holiday trek.

It includes a lot of acclimatization which increases the total time of the trek.

The trek to Ghorepani Poonhill begins from Nayapul tracing a clockwise loop via villages at Ulleri to reach Ghorepani. It is recommended to trek to Poon Hill for sunrise on the third day or trek on the second day to Poon Hill.

The Ghorepani trek can be done in as less as 3-4 days. It is a rewarding time efficient trek. It is also easier than the Annapurna Circuit trek as the maximum altitude is barely below the range at which altitude sickness affects people.

Hence it is achievable for most people without excessive strain. The Ghorepani Trek is easy to finish because hikers don't need much time to adjust to the altitude. This trek doesn't require a lot of getting used to the thin air, so people can do it in a short time without problems.

Conclusion

This trek appeals to families and vacationers making it a thrilling experience. Plus, people of all ages can enjoy this hike. It has an impact on trekkers by showing them the beauty of mountain landscapes. The trail causes a revolution in how people view short treks proving they can be just as rewarding as longer ones.
